Hello,

We believe that track record is a good indicator for future performance. Over recent years Gateway’s substantial investments in African infrastructure have been well documented, including being a foundation customer of SEACOM, as well as the largest provider of satellite capacity over the continent. Now we’re evolving both our submarine and terrestrial network capabilities.

This issue of Talking Drums looks at these two key areas of telecommunications infrastructure, what the current state of play is, and what is coming next, at a time when there is increasing demand for connectivity from consumers and businesses, and an increasing need for capacity from carriers.

In order to focus on the carrier market, a new organisation has been created –Gateway Carrier & Wholesale Services. I am delighted to be heading up this new division, further driving Gateway’s leadership position at the forefront of developing the pan-African telecommunications landscape.

All this comes at a turbulent time in the economy, as the financial crisis continues to impact global business. What we are seeing in telecommunications, however, provides a very positive outlook.

We’ve had further endorsement that we are doing the right thing, as for the second year in a row we are the proud winners of Capacity magazine’s Best African Wholesale Offering 2009. Having been assessed on quality, performance and reach of network, speed to market, pricing strategy and our overall investment in our network we are very proud to have retained this business accolade.

In Kenya, the regulatory body has also recognised the part that Gateway can play, awarding us three new licenses – NFP, ASP and BPO. This further confirms our commitment to the market and the fact that, more than any other service provider, Gateway understands the African market and has the scale, resources and technical expertise to meet the requirements of the African telecommunications industry.

We hope you enjoy this edition of Talking Drums, and – as ever – if you have any insights or ideas or questions on the articles to follow, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
